Why Listening is Key to Network Marketing Success

Network Marketing: If you’re serious about creating a successful business, you need to become an excellent listener.

Network Marketing: Stop and Listen

I’m in San Francisco for a couple of days with my daughter, Julia. We’re here because I’ve been invited to guest

network marketing on Powell Street

The street sounds like a symphony... In network-marketing, as in all of life, listening — really listening — to the needs of your customers is key to your success. Photo credit Gina Cordova.

lecture on marketing and entrepreneurship at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, but really, that’s just the icing on the cake when you get an opportunity to immerse yourself in one of the coolest cities in the world and soak up the unique culture that San Francisco provides.

While shopping on Powell Street this afternoon (because what else do you expect I’d be doing with a 13-year-old who has her very own fashion blog?), I decided to record the sounds of the street on my iPhone. That way, I could capture one facet of the experience of being in the City — the symphonies of the streets — that I miss so much when I’m back in Los Angeles.

Am I glad I did.

To my left, headed towards Market Street, an acoustic band of three young guys was tapping out something on tambourines and a set of bongos as, directly in front of me, the Powell Street Cable Car rumbled past. When it had gone by, I noticed a girl busking on the other side of the street, singing opera. There was something about the spot she chose there on the sidewalk that made the open air acoustics surprisingly fantastic, and although she was not singing in time to  the trolley or the tambourines, when I played back the recording, I heard music that makes sense only when it’s played in the streets.

Network Marketing: Really Listen

(You can listen to the audio file at the end of this post.)

In all of life — our relationships, our business, our own inner growth — listening is perhaps the greatest gift that we can give to each other and ourselves. And yet, I wonder how much time we dedicate to truly, profoundly, and deeply listening?

Of course, listening is a central part of success in your day-to-day relationships, and if you want proof of that, just check out your local bookstore’s inventory on the subject.

Network Marketing: Applied Listening.

If you’re looking to build a successful network marketing company, it’s a no-brainer that listening to what your customers need and want (and then giving that to them, as best as you are able) will be key.

Likewise, listening to your mentors, your upline, and those that have a wealth of how-to knowledge to share will also help you make tremendous progress in a very short amount of time.

But what about listening to you? How much time to do you set aside everyday to check in with yourself, to listen for your own inner guidance, to really hear what your feelings are trying to tell you? As I’ve written before, monitoring how you feel is one of the most important things you can do to ensure you’re not only on target with your network marketing goals, but in every other area of your life as well.

UPDATE:

Yesterday, I stood in front of a group of some of the most inspiring young entrepreneurs and spoke to them about what it takes to be a success when you’re striking out on your own. I was amazed at this group of young adults, at their promise and potential, at the level of commitment that they demonstrated to not only their industry, but to themselves.

As anticipated,  I also did a lot of listening. Because I had a hunch that they’d have a few lessons to teach me as well. They did not disappoint.  I hope I’ll have the chance to go back for another lecture soon, and that I’ll hear from some of the kids I met yesterday as they make their way into the marketplace. I also hope they know how excited I am for them.

The future of entrepreneurship is in good hands.
